With a minor change, I've also got it to work with Ubuntu 13.04.</div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><h2>Dodge Windows?</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Unity used to support "window dodge" autohide behaviour until Ubuntu 12.04. <b>Using "dodge windows", the Launcher hides when the active window or a maximized window overlaps it.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are two window dodge scripts (both packaged as debs so you don't have to set up anything manually) you can use with Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04: one that adds a "real" window dodge behaviour, just like it was implemented in Unity until Ubuntu 12.04, as described above, and another one that makes the launcher dodge only for maximized windows.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Below you can watch the Unity Dodge Windows script in action, under Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail:</div><br /><center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TFdtSAvatig" width="560"></iframe><br />(<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFdtSAvatig">direct video link</a>)</center><br /><br /><br /><h2>Known issues / limitations</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The Unity Dodge Windows script isn't perfect and has some limitations:</b></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>it doesn't work with multiple monitors;</li><li>if you were using two monitors but disabled / unplugged one, you need to log out and log back in for Unity Dodge Windows to work;</li><li>the icons on the desktop will shift to the left when the launcher hides and move back to their initial location when the launcher is revealed (you can see this in the video above). This isn't a big issue if you're using the script that makes the launcher dodge only for maximized windows, but for the other one you may find it a bit annoying. A work-around is to disable the file manager from handling the desktop (e.g.: using GNOME Tweak Tool: on the "Desktop" tab, set "Have file manager handle the desktop" to OFF). If you find a better work-around, let us know;</li></ul><br />Also, to enable / disable it, you must install / uninstall the package (see below) and log out, then log back in. Dropbox Uploader Bash Script: Useful For Servers, Raspberry Pi And More

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="https://github.com/andreafabrizi/Dropbox-Uploader">Dropbox Uploader</a> is a bash script you can use to access your <a href="http://www.dropbox.com/">Dropbox</a> files from the command line, without having to install the Dropbox client. The script can upload, download, delete, share or list the files available in your Dropbox account.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The script is useful in many situations, including: automatic backups, access Dropbox from an ARM server / <b><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/02/raspberry-pi-computer-goes-on-sale.html">Raspberry Pi</a></b>, etc. (since Dropbox isn't available for ARM). That's because its only requirement is cURL, so you don't have to install the Dropbox client to quickly upload or download some files from Dropbox.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">Dropbox Uploader isn't just for Linux and it should work on Mac OSX, FreeBSD or Windows/Cygwin too. Also, since it uses the official Dropbox API for the authentication process, you don't have to enter your username and password and you can easily revoke its access to your account from the Dropbox website.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The first time your run the script, you must create a Dropbox app and allow the script to access your Dropbox account. I-Nex: Tool To List Hardware Information In Linux, Similar To CPU-Z

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="https://launchpad.net/i-nex">I-Nex</a> is an application that gathers information for hardware components available on your system and displays it using an user interface similar to the popular Windows tool CPU-Z.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I-Nex can display information for the following components: CPU, GPU, Motherboard, Sound, Hard disks, RAM, Network and USB as well as some system info like the hostname, Linux distribution and version, Xorg, GCC, GLX versions and Linux Kernel info.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Besides being able to display hardware information, I-Nex can also generate an advanced report for which you can select what to include and optionally send the report to a service such as Pastebin (and others). It also features an option to take a screenshot of the I-Nex window directly from the application.</div><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The difference between I-Nex and the other hardware information GUI tools available for Linux (we <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2011/07/how-to-get-hardware-information-in.html">wrote</a> about some of them a while back) is that the information is better organized and is displayed faster (than lshw-gtk for instance). Upgrade To Gvfs With MTP Support In Ubuntu 12.10 Or 12.04 To Easily Connect Android 4.0+ Devices

<div style="text-align: justify;">Like I was telling you <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/unity-changes-ubuntu-1304-raring.html">a while back</a>, <b>Gvfs has been <a href="https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/gvfs/+changelog">updated</a> in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, bringing a new MTP backend which allows users to access Android 4.0 devices which do not support the USB Mass Storage</b> protocol, along with many other changes. Since it's unlikely for the latest Gvfs (1.15.2) to be backported to older Ubuntu releases, <b>you can use a PPA which has the latest Gvfs MTP backend backported to Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10</b>.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n3C-4LcRfmE/UP2I33reS6I/AAAAAAAAMv0/R8sGsp8hLh8/s1600/android-gvfs-mtp.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Android 4.0+ gvfs Ubuntu" border="0" height="242" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n3C-4LcRfmE/UP2I33reS6I/AAAAAAAAMv0/R8sGsp8hLh8/s320/android-gvfs-mtp.png" title="Android 4.0+ gvfs Ubuntu" width="320" /></a></div></div><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">We've already covered a way to connect Android 4.0 devices that don't support UMS to Ubuntu, using <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-mount-android-40-ubuntu-go-mtpfs.html">Go-Mtpfs</a>, but that requires to mount the Android device manually. If you upgrade to the backported packages in this PPA, you'll get seamless MTP support so when you connect an Android 4.0 device via USB, it should automatically show up in Nautilus (or Thunar, it should work with it too) without having to manually mount it. You'll also be able to unmount it from Nautilus.<br /><br />I've tested the packages on Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 with my Samsung Galaxy S2 (Android 4.2.1) and Gvfs has worked as expected (with some minor issues though, see below) and I was able to transfer files to my Android 4.2.1 phone.<br /><br />Also, the packages were <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/112555004333838485342/posts/TLWjkGzDCFs">tested</a> by WebUpd8 reader Bhaismachine (thank you!) in Ubuntu 12.10 using a Nexus 4 and he reported that the device showed up in Nautilus and further more, it seemed faster than before.<br /><br /><b>Issues:</b> transferring music using Rhythmbox or Clementine didn't work in my test (including in Ubuntu 13.04 - I've reported the bug <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/1108104">HERE</a>), but <a href="http://i.imgur.com/P1tycS3.png">it did work</a> with Clementine for Bhaismachine. So this part doesn't seem too reliable for now. Also, by default the image thumbnails are not displayed in Nautilus - <b>to enable image thumbnails</b>, open the Nautilus preferences and on the "Preview" tab, select "Always" for "Show thumbnails" under "Other Previewable Files".<br /><br />for some reason, there are no thumbnails for images on the Android device in Nautilus and the images can't be opened directly from the device but copying and viewing them on the computer works. These issues aren't Ubuntu 12.10 or 12.04 specific and they even occur in Ubuntu 13.04.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In other related news, the latest CyanogenMod 10.1 nightly has added an option for switching between UMS and MTP/PTP mode (<i>System Settings > Storage</i>), so you can now mount Android devices via USB mass storage in Ubuntu. That means you won't need Gvfs with MTP support if you're using the latest CM nightly.</div><br /><br /><h2>Upgrade Gvfs in Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 to get Android 4.0 support for devices which don't support USB Mass Storage interface</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The packages in this PPA may be unstable. Use the PPA at your own risk! There are instructions on how to revert the changes at the bottom of the post.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>1.</b> <b>To add the Gvfs (and libmtp) PPA created by the Gvfs MTP backend developer in Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:langdalepl/gvfs-mtp<br />sudo apt-get update</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>2. Then, launch Software Updater (previously known as Update Manager) and install the available updates</b>.<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>3. </b>Once everything has been updated successfully,<b> restart your computer</b>, <b>unlock your Android device</b>, connect it via USB and it should show up in your file manager (tested with Nautilus and Thunar 1.6).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If you don't unlock the Android 4.0+ device, it may show up as empty in the file manager, at least that was the case for me. <br /><br /><b>Update</b> 13 February 2013: If your device is not currently supported, check out <a href="http://ppa.webupd8.org/post/43022082410/libmtp-updated-for-ubuntu-quantal-and-precise-with">THIS</a> list and if your device is on that list, add our <a href="https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/unstable">Unstable PPA</a> and upgrade libmtp (I've backported the latest libmtp from Raring to Quantal and Precise in this PPA).</div><br /><br /><h2>Revert the changes (purge the PPA)</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">To revert the changes (downgrade all the packages from our Gvfs PPA to the version available in the official Ubuntu repositories), firstly <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/install-ppa-purge-with-multi-arch.html">install PPA-Purge with multi-arch support</a> from the main WebUpd8 PPA.</div><br />Then, purge the PPA using the following command:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo ppa-purge ppa:langdalepl/gvfs-mtp </code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Wait for the packages to be downgraded successfully, restart the computer and everything should go back to the way it was before adding the Gvfs PPA above.</div></div>

Eclipse IDE: Get Ubuntu AppMenu And HUD Support

<div style="text-align: justify;">By default, the popular Eclipse IDE does not support the Ubuntu AppMenu or  <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/hud-ubuntus-new-smart-menus-announced.html">HUD</a>. The reason for this is that Eclipse has been <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdbusmenu/+bug/618587">blacklisted</a> so it wouldn't use the AppMenu around the time of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat because it didn't work back then.<br /><br />Now Eclipse does work with the AppMenu, however, there are some minor glitches like some menu shortcuts not being displayed (although they do work). Now let's whielist Eclipse so it supports AppMenu and HUD:</b><br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo sed -i 's/Eclipse/Xclipse/g' <b>/path/to/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/</b>libappmenu.so</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>For the last to commands above, remember to use the exact path to the GtK2 libappmenu.so you've found under step 1!</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Alternatively, you can also use <a href="https://launchpad.net/~absinthesyringe/+archive/eclipse">a PPA</a> which comes with a package that basically  runs all these commands automatically but: the PPA may give you the wrong impression that if you remove the package, everything is reverted and in fact it's not; also, </i><i>you'll still have to reinstall the package if Appmenu Gtk2 is updated (so by the way, you'll have to follow these instructions again if that package is updated); and finally, </i><i>the PPA package doesn't work correctly for Ubuntu 12.04. That's why I've preferred the manual instructions over the PPA.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>That's it! Ubuntu Might Become A Rolling Release Distribution Between LTS Releases

This is just a discussion for now, but it could become a reality starting with Ubuntu 14.04:</div><br /><a name='more'></a><blockquote>The plan was by 14.04 to target what we're calling a rolling release and go from a LTS to LTS only model and eliminate these intermediate releases. That was being discussed earlier, we didn't set anything in stone but that's still in the cards as a possibility of happening when we hit the next 14.04 release so <b>it could go from 14.04 to 16.04 and everything in between is what they consider a rolling release</b> [...], following the latest package releases, not only for the Kernel but for the entire distribution [...].<br /><br /><div style="text-align: right;">- Leann Ogasawara (approximate quote from the video)</div></blockquote><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If this becomes reality, I'm sure a lot of users will be very happy because they'd get the latest updates for all packages (and new packages would be available a lot quicker) without having to upgrade to a newer Ubuntu release. This might have an impact on stability, but some users already consider non-LTS releases to be "glorified betas" so at least this way Ubuntu users would get the latest updates in exchange for the stability offered by a LTS.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Besides possible stability, there's another downside which Canonical takes into consideration: a lot of hype is generated and many users get excited for each Ubuntu release, but using a rolling release model between LTS releases would mean there would be 3 less Ubuntu releases for every 2 years and thus, Ubuntu users would be less enthusiastic.<br /><br />These and probably many other factors count towards taking a decision, but the most important one should be: "will this make Ubuntu users happy?". Unity Reboot (Launcher To Quickly Reboot In A Different OS) Updated For Ubuntu 12.10 And 13.04

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Today I've updated <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2011/09/unity-reboot-ubuntu-unity-launcher-to.html">Unity Reboot</a> to work with the latest GRUB 2.0 available in Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Unity Reboot is a custom Unity launcher that can be used to quickly reboot into a different OS / Linux distribution, useful for those who dual boot (or triple boot </b>or... it should work with any number of operating systems, including Windows, various Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora, etc.). This isn't just for Unity and <b>it should also work with docks that support Unity quicklists</b>, like DockBarX, Cairo Dock or Plank.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Here's a screenshot with Unity Reboot in Ubuntu 12.10 on a system on which I triple boot: Ubuntu 12.10, Fedora 18 and Windows 7 (in VirtualBox, set up just for testing this):</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MYrNP3RV1Rk/UP7qcaxIkcI/AAAAAAAAMyM/9rbPt0ZP4MI/s1600/unity-reboot.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="unity reboot ubuntu fedora windows 7" border="0" height="252" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MYrNP3RV1Rk/UP7qcaxIkcI/AAAAAAAAMyM/9rbPt0ZP4MI/s320/unity-reboot.png" title="unity reboot ubuntu fedora windows 7" width="320" /></a></div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">This is how it works: selecting an entry from the quicklist, the system will reboot and that entry will be selected in the GRUB menu. That means you can still boot to a different OS if you change your mind. You can set the GRUB menu timeout to 0 and you won't see the GRUB menu and instead, the system will directly reboot into the selected OS. This only applies for that system restart (so only one time) and after that, the first boot entry should be selected, like it is with the default GRUB settings.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The GRUB menu has changed starting with Ubuntu 12.10 and the various options for an OS (like old kernels for Ubuntu) are displayed in a sub menu which isn't displayed by default, so I've had to tweak Unity Reboot to work with this new GRUB 2 menu. <b>The new version also uses pkexec</b> (so you'll get a nice password prompt in GNOME Shell for instance) <b>instead of gksu for the reboot command.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>You can select to reboot without having to enter your pasword</b>, by right clicking the Unity Reboot launcher icon and selecting <i>Settings > Don't ask for password on restart</i> (for the settings, gksu is still used and not pkexec).</div><br /><br /><b>Important notes:</b><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">clicking the icon on the Unity launcher doesn't do anything (a notification will be displayed if you left click it). All the functionality is in the quicklists so you need to right click the icon and select an an item. Your computer will then reboot and automatically select the item you've clicked in the GRUB menu;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Unity Reboot only works if Ubuntu (the installation on which you're using Unity Reboot) has been installed after the other operating systems. So for example, if you triple boot Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.10 and Fedora 18, Unity Reboot will only work if Ubuntu 12.10 was the last you've installed from these 3 (basically, it needs to run on the Linux distribution that has installed GRUB).</li></ul><br /><br /><h2>Install Unity Reboot in Ubuntu</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>1. Unity Reboot is available in the main WebUpd8 PPA. Then click the shortcut on the right to add a keyboard shortcut and press the key you want to use for triggering the drop-down terminal (I've used F12).<br /><br />This also means you don't have to add the terminal to your startup applications and instead, the application will start the first time you use the keyboard shortcut you've assigned using the instructions above. </div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Then, press the keyboard shortcut you've used to open the terminal. Even though initially Xfce4 Terminal doesn't have any custom drop-down settings, now that you're using it as a drop-down terminal,<b> a new tab called "Drop-down" should show up in its preferences</b>, which allows you to tweak the way the drop-down works. </div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/xfce4-terminal-dropdown-unity.png" rel="image_group" title="Xfce4 Terminal drop-down running in Unity"><img alt="Xfce4 Terminal drop-down running in Unity" src="http://img.netupd8.com/xfce4-terminal-dropdown-unity_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Here, if you use Unity (maybe on other DEs too) make sure you uncheck "Use shortcut to focus visible window" so the terminal closes when you press the keyboard shortcut you've set above. Please note that I've encountered an error when trying to create an account: AirDroid allows you to use Twitter, Google and other services to create the account and if the username entered exists on Twitter (even though you didn't select Twitter) but it's not your account, you won't be able to register, so you may have to enter an username that doesn't exist on Twitter. Some users have reported some other more or less similar issues when registering and the AirDroid developers are working on a fix for this.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>You can still use AirDroid 2 without an account, but you won't have access to all the features</b>. For instance, you'll be able to control the camera from the browser, but the phone finder service won't work and you won't be able to transfer files over 3G / 4G. You can, however, transfer files over WiFi if you're not using an AirDroid account. However, let's not forget that AirDroid v2 is still in beta, so all of these small issues should be fixed soon!<br /><br />Since AirDroid v2 is still in beta, new features might be added later on. </div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">AirDroid is probably the best solution to transfer files to/from your Android 4.0+ device on Linux, considering the current issues with this.
