How To Disable Recursive Search In Nautilus 3.6 or 3.8 [Patch w/ PPA]

<div style="text-align: justify;">The type-ahead find feature was removed from Nautilus starting with version 3.6. Now when typing in a Nautilus (3.6+) window, it performs a search in the current directory and all subdirectories instead of selecting the file or folder that matches what you've typed. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This feature is not that bad except for one thing: searching in subdirectories makes it pretty much unusable at times. Using the default Nautilus 3.8 (Ubuntu Saucy), a lot of files show up when typing "gen" which is confusing and makes it harder to spot the file I was looking for. Using the patched Nautilus, only the <i>genymotion</i> folder and the <i>genymotion-1.2.1_x64.bin</i> file show up so I immediately spot the file I was looking for.<br /><br />This may not be the best example, but I'm sure many of you have noticed how annoying the recursive search is in many situations.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If you prefer the old type-ahead find feature, unfortunately there's no way of getting it in Nautilus 3.6+, at least not yet. But there are some other alternatives, like downgrading to <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/04/get-nautilus-34-features-back-in-ubuntu.html" title="Get Nautilus 3.4 Features Back In Ubuntu 13.04 With SolusOS Patched Nautilus">Nautilus 3.4</a>, using <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-install-nemo-file-manager-in.html" title="How To Install Nemo File Manager In Ubuntu">Nemo file manager</a>, etc.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Install Nautilus patched to allow enabling/disabling recursive search</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">To be able to disable recursive search in Nautilus 3.6 or 3.8, you can either patch Nautilus yourself - the patch can be found <a href="https://code.launchpad.net/~dr3mro/nautilus/fix-1164016">HERE</a>, or use Amr Osman's PPA to install an already patched Nautilus.<br /><br /><b>To add the PPA (for Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10) and upgrade Nautilus, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dr3mro/personal<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get upgrade</code></pre><br />Once Nautilus is upgraded successfully, restart it:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>nautilus -q</code></pre><br />Then, disable recursive search using the following command:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences enable-recursive-search false</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If later on you want to re-enable recursive search, use the command below:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences enable-recursive-search true</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">You can also change this setting via Dconf-editor (make sure dconf-tools is installed: "sudo apt-get install dconf-tools"), by navigating to: <i>org > gnome > nautilus > preferences</i> where you should find the "enable-recursive-search" option.</div><br />

With a minor change, I've also got it to work with Ubuntu 13.04.</div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><h2>Dodge Windows?</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Unity used to support "window dodge" autohide behaviour until Ubuntu 12.04. <b>Using "dodge windows", the Launcher hides when the active window or a maximized window overlaps it.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are two window dodge scripts (both packaged as debs so you don't have to set up anything manually) you can use with Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04: one that adds a "real" window dodge behaviour, just like it was implemented in Unity until Ubuntu 12.04, as described above, and another one that makes the launcher dodge only for maximized windows.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Below you can watch the Unity Dodge Windows script in action, under Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail:</div><br /><center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TFdtSAvatig" width="560"></iframe><br />(<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFdtSAvatig">direct video link</a>)</center><br /><br /><br /><h2>Known issues / limitations</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The Unity Dodge Windows script isn't perfect and has some limitations:</b></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>it doesn't work with multiple monitors;</li><li>if you were using two monitors but disabled / unplugged one, you need to log out and log back in for Unity Dodge Windows to work;</li><li>the icons on the desktop will shift to the left when the launcher hides and move back to their initial location when the launcher is revealed (you can see this in the video above). This isn't a big issue if you're using the script that makes the launcher dodge only for maximized windows, but for the other one you may find it a bit annoying. A work-around is to disable the file manager from handling the desktop (e.g.: using GNOME Tweak Tool: on the "Desktop" tab, set "Have file manager handle the desktop" to OFF). If you find a better work-around, let us know;</li></ul><br />Also, to enable / disable it, you must install / uninstall the package (see below) and log out, then log back in. Enable TRIM On SSD (Solid-State Drives) In Ubuntu For Better Performance

Without using TRIM, the SSD speed decreases after a while so if you have a solid-state drive that supports TRIM, you should enable it so your SSD remains fast over time.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">This isn't easy to benchmark because the performance decreases over time so you'd neet to check the SSD speed constantly for a few months to see exactly how the SSD is affected when TRIM is not enabled. But if your SSD read / write speed decreases a lot over time and you haven't enabled TRIM, this may be way.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Some articles mention using online discard</b> - enabling TRIM by adding the "discard" option to /etc/fstab -, <b>but there are many <a href="http://opensuse.14.n6.nabble.com/SSD-detection-when-creating-first-time-fstab-td3313048.html">who</a> <a href="https://patrick-nagel.net/blog/archives/337">say</a> this isn't a good idea for most solid-state drives</b> and you'll get a pretty significant performance hit when trying to delete a large number of small files. So <b>below I'll let you know how to use both of these methods: online discard (not recommended) and the recommended way: using fstrim and a cron (anacron) job.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Note: the instructions below have been tested in Ubuntu, but they may (most probably) work with other Linux distributions as well.</i></div><br /><a name='more'></a><b>Before enabling TRIM, you must make sure:</b><br /><ul><li>you're using the Linux Kernel 2.6.33 or newer</li><li>your SSD supports TRIM</li><li>the partition(s) are EXT4 or BTRFS<b>*</b></li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>*</b> Since not many people are using BTRFS, this post will only cover enabling TRIM on EXT4 partitions.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>If you're unsure if your SSD supports TRIM, you can run the following command:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep "TRIM supported"</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Where "<i>/dev/sda</i>" is the solid-state drive (it may be <i>/dev/sdb</i>, <i>/dev/sdc</i>, etc. for you), and the command should return something like this: "<i>Data Set Management TRIM supported (limit 8 blocks)</i>" (if there's no output, your SSD doesn't support TRIM).  If you don't know what to use here, you can get a list of hard disks and their partitions by using the following command:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo fdisk -l</code></pre><br /><br /><h2>Enable TRIM for solid-state drives (SSD) in Linux</h2><br /><h3>Using online discard (fstab) - not recommended</h3><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If the conditions above are met, you can proceed to enable TRIM for your SSD. <b>If you want to use the online discard option (not recommended!)</b>, open <i>/etc/fstab</i> as root with a text editor:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>gksu gedit /etc/fstab</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">And add the "discard" option (separated by a comma and no space!) to the SSD partitions you want to enable TRIM for. How To List Packages From A PPA / Repository In Ubuntu

<div style="text-align: justify;">A few weeks ago, we saw how to find out <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/how-to-find-out-to-which-ppa-repository.html">to which PPA / repository a package belongs to</a> in Ubuntu / Debian. But how about getting a list of packages available in a PPA / repository?</div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><br /><h3>Synaptic</h3><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">To get a list of packages available in a PPA / repository enabled on your system (if the repository is disabled or not added on your system, it won't show up here), firstly install Synaptic if you haven't already:</div><br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install synaptic</code></pre><br />(or install <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-install-synaptic-with-gtk3.html">Synaptic GTK3</a>)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Then <b>open Synaptic, select "Origin" on the bottom left, then select a PPA or repository on the left and it should list all packages in that PPA / repository for your Ubuntu version, both installed and not installed:</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/synaptic-origin.png" rel="image_group" title="List packages in repositories with Synaptic"><img alt="Synaptic origin" src="http://img.netupd8.com/synaptic-origin_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">In the latest Synaptic built with GTK3, there are two entries for each PPA here, one that uses "/now" at the end, which displays the packages you've installed from a repository and another one which displays all the packages available in that repository.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Important:</b> if the exact same package (including the package version) exists in two or more PPAs / repositories, it will only be listed for one repository entry in Synaptic. It doesn't work with regular repositories (just Launchpad PPAs) though and the PPA needs to be enabled on your system for this to work. Add a "New Empty File" Entry To Nautilus 3.6 Context Menu

<div style="text-align: justify;">As you probably know, a small but useful feature - at least for me -, was removed from Nautilus 3.6 (and newer): the context menu option to create a new empty text file.
