How To List Packages From A PPA / Repository In Ubuntu

<div style="text-align: justify;">A few weeks ago, we saw how to find out <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/how-to-find-out-to-which-ppa-repository.html">to which PPA / repository a package belongs to</a> in Ubuntu / Debian. But how about getting a list of packages available in a PPA / repository?</div><br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br /><h3>Synaptic</h3><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">To get a list of packages available in a PPA / repository enabled on your system (if the repository is disabled or not added on your system, it won't show up here), firstly install Synaptic if you haven't already:</div><br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install synaptic</code></pre><br />(or install <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-install-synaptic-with-gtk3.html">Synaptic GTK3</a>)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Then <b>open Synaptic, select "Origin" on the bottom left, then select a PPA or repository on the left and it should list all packages in that PPA / repository for your Ubuntu version, both installed and not installed:</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/synaptic-origin.png" rel="image_group" title="List packages in repositories with Synaptic"><img alt="Synaptic origin" src="http://img.netupd8.com/synaptic-origin_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">In the latest Synaptic built with GTK3, there are two entries for each PPA here, one that uses "/now" at the end, which displays the packages you've installed from a repository and another one which displays all the packages available in that repository.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Important:</b> if the exact same package (including the package version) exists in two or more PPAs / repositories, it will only be listed for one repository entry in Synaptic. It doesn't work with regular repositories (just Launchpad PPAs) though and the PPA needs to be enabled on your system for this to work. How To Install Synaptic With GTK3 Support In Ubuntu [PPA]

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The latest Synaptic Package Manager from BZR has been ported to GTK3</b> and the new version will probably be available in the Ubuntu 13.04 repositories. Zukitwo, Adwaita Cupertino Themes Ported To GTK 3.6

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Two pretty popular GTK3 themes have been updated to work with the latest stable GTK 3.6 recently: Zukitwo and Adwaita Cupertino (now called Gnome Cupertino).</b></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Gnome Cupertino (previously known as Adwaita Cupertino) </b>is a GTK2/3 theme pack based on the colors of Mac OSX Snow Leopard and Lion, each with variations optimized for either GNOME Shell or Unity.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/gnome-cupertino.png" rel="image_group" title="Gnome Cupertino GTK 3.6 theme"><img alt="Gnome Cupertino theme" src="http://img.netupd8.com/gnome-cupertino_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><a name="more"></a><div style="text-align: justify;">Because Adwaita Cupertino was practically re-written from scratch in the transition to GTK 3.6 and also, since the theme doesn't uses the Adwaita Engine for several versions, its designer decided to rename it to Gnome Cupertino.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The package available in our PPA has two themes: the default Gnome Cupertino and a variant optimized for Unity, but inside the theme folder (e.g. /usr/share/themes/Gnome-Cupertino) you'll find some alternate Metacity / Unity buttons which you can use, but you must make the changes manually - see the readme.txt file inside the theme folder. In the same file you can also tweak the theme to use a custom style for Nautilus 3.4 because by default, it's optimized for Nautilus 3.6.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Since the theme has just been ported to GTK 3.6, there are some bugs. For instance, the GNOME Classic indicators have a weird white border at the bottom. Use Ubuntu 13.04 Software Center, Software Updater And Nautilus Icons With My-humanity Icon Theme

<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/prefer-gnome-shell-download-ubuntu.html">Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10</a> uses GNOME Packagekit ("Software") as the default package management application, but this will change in Raring Ringtail.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>A recent <a href="https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/ubuntu-gnome-meta/0.5">update</a> in Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 Raring Ringtail (currently under development) has removed GNOME Packagekit from the default applications, replacing it with Ubuntu Software Center and Ubuntu's Update Manager.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://netupd8.com/w8img2/gs-usc.png"><img alt="Ubuntu GNOME Remix Software Center" src="http://netupd8.com/w8img2/gs-usc_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">According to a <a href="https://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/msg00145.html">post</a> on a mailing list by Jeremy Bicha, the main Ubuntu GNOME developer, GNOME Packagekit is currently "<i>pretty disappointing</i>", while Ubuntu Software Center is "<i>one of Ubuntu's best features with ratings and reviews, screenshots, app icons, access to commercial software, and decent search</i>", so even though this change will slightly affect the pure GNOME3 desktop experience that Ubuntu GNOME Remix is trying to achieve, it will definitely provide a better overall default experience.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Further more, this won't be the first GNOME distribution that ships with its own software management application: Mageia and openSUSE do this too.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Also, as you probably know, Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10 includes the classic session by default (along with GNOME Shell, which is the default session, obviously). Well, the same 13.04 update brought another pretty major change: even though Ubuntu 13.04 is likely to <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/ubuntu-1304-only-some-gnome-components.html">ship with GNOME 3.6 for the most part</a>, and not 3.8 (which will remove the fallback session), <b>the classic (fallback) session packages were removed from the default Ubuntu GNOME Remix 13.04 Raring Ringtail installation</b>.</div>
