Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail Changes: Memory Improvements, Two New Default Indicators

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The work to "make Ubuntu fit on mobile" has advantages for the desktop users and recently, some changes have landed in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail (currently under development) which should reduce the memory used by some default packages.</b></div><br /><a name="more"></a><div style="text-align: justify;">For instance, a recent GTK3 <a href="https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/gtk+3.0/3.6.4-0ubuntu6">update</a> comes with a patch to "only load CSS image data when needed, saving a substantial amount of memory". Other such changes include:</div><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">several memory leaks have been fixed for libdbusmenu, update-notifier, upower, whoopsie and more;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">LightDM PPS has <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1074279">dropped</a> from 25.7M to 0.6M;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">some processes were changed to exit-on-idle and be restarted-on-demand rather than running all the time (signond, signon-ui);</li><li style="text-align: justify;">some GNOME Settings Daemon plugins were turned off by default for the desktop (and even more for the Nexus setup);</li><li style="text-align: justify;">GNOME Online Accounts is no longer installed by default since it's not used by Unity (it's only required by GNOME Shell);</li><li style="text-align: justify;">code optimization in several desktop services.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">According to the Ubuntu Devel <a href="https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2013-February/036436.html">mailing list</a>, the memory optimizations performed for Nexus (which include the desktop components mentioned above) has resulted in a drop for the idle memory usage from 600M to 400M. The change probably isn't so drastic for the desktop, but it's nevertheless an important step in the right direction.</div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Besides these under-the-hood changes, there are also <a href="https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/unity/6.12.0daily13.02.04.1-0ubuntu1">two new default indicators</a> in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail: </b></div><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">you're probably familiar with the first one: Sync Menu, an indicator which right now only supports Ubuntu One but later it might support other services such as Dropbox. The indicator has been available starting with Ubuntu 12.10, but it wasn't added by default until now. For now, it can be used to enable/disable Ubuntu One sync, display current and recent transfers or share files, but more features should be available in the future, according to <a href="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SyncMenu">THIS</a> Ubuntu wiki page;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">the second new default indicator is a <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-bluetooth/+bug/1111314">Bluetooth Indicator</a>,  which should replace the old Bluetooth Indicator that is provided by a distro patch over the fallback icon of gnome-bluetooth (the old Bluetooth Applet fallback icon will be dropped along with the <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/fallback-mode-classic-session-to-be.html">whole fallback mode with GNOME 3.8</a>). Up until now, I've only encountered one nasty <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1102654">bug</a> with Intel graphic cards that was fixed a while back. <br /><br />If you want to give it a try, you can download the latest Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail daily ISO from <a href="http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/">HERE</a>. But, even though it feels quite stable, Ubuntu Raring Ringtail is still in development so things can break! Don't use it on production machines!</div>

Seafile: Robust File Synchronization And Collaboration Tool That You Can Run On Your Linux Server

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="http://seafile.com/">Seafile</a> is an open source cloud file synchronization and collaboration tool, similar to <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/">Dropbox</a>,</b><b> <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/owncloud-4-released-with-file.html">OwnCloud</a> or <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/install-sparkleshare-10-in-ubuntu.html">SparkleShare</a>, that you can use on your Linux server or you can sign up for a Seafile account and get 5GB of free space on their servers.</b></div><br /><br /><b>Seafile features:</b><br /><ul><li>Seafile uses file libraries which can be synchronized separately;</li><li>Users can create and join groups;</li><li>File revisions;</li><li>File preview, comments, event notifications;</li><li>Library encryption;</li><li>Share files; </li><li><b>Clients available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android and iOS.</b></li></ul><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><h2>Why Seafile?</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">So why use Seafile and not Dropbox, <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/owncloud-4-released-with-file.html">OwnCloud</a> or <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/install-sparkleshare-10-in-ubuntu.html">SparkleShare</a>? According to the Seafile developers, their tool is more mature than ownCloud or SparkleShare, ready for production (both the server and client) and has an online collaboration feature useful for teamwork, which isn't available in Dropbox.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">However, Seafile does have less features some similar services: for instance, the calendar feature available in ownCloud is not available for Seafile. With a minor change, I've also got it to work with Ubuntu 13.04.</div><br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><h2>Dodge Windows?</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Unity used to support "window dodge" autohide behaviour until Ubuntu 12.04. <b>Using "dodge windows", the Launcher hides when the active window or a maximized window overlaps it.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are two window dodge scripts (both packaged as debs so you don't have to set up anything manually) you can use with Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04: one that adds a "real" window dodge behaviour, just like it was implemented in Unity until Ubuntu 12.04, as described above, and another one that makes the launcher dodge only for maximized windows.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Below you can watch the Unity Dodge Windows script in action, under Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail:</div><br /><center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TFdtSAvatig" width="560"></iframe><br />(<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFdtSAvatig">direct video link</a>)</center><br /><br /><br /><h2>Known issues / limitations</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The Unity Dodge Windows script isn't perfect and has some limitations:</b></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>it doesn't work with multiple monitors;</li><li>if you were using two monitors but disabled / unplugged one, you need to log out and log back in for Unity Dodge Windows to work;</li><li>the icons on the desktop will shift to the left when the launcher hides and move back to their initial location when the launcher is revealed (you can see this in the video above). This isn't a big issue if you're using the script that makes the launcher dodge only for maximized windows, but for the other one you may find it a bit annoying. A work-around is to disable the file manager from handling the desktop (e.g.: using GNOME Tweak Tool: on the "Desktop" tab, set "Have file manager handle the desktop" to OFF). If you find a better work-around, let us know;</li></ul><br />Also, to enable / disable it, you must install / uninstall the package (see below) and log out, then log back in.
