Ubuntu GNOME Remix 13.04 Replaces GNOME Packagekit With Ubuntu Software Center

<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/prefer-gnome-shell-download-ubuntu.html">Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10</a> uses GNOME Packagekit ("Software") as the default package management application, but this will change in Raring Ringtail.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>A recent <a href="https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/ubuntu-gnome-meta/0.5">update</a> in Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 Raring Ringtail (currently under development) has removed GNOME Packagekit from the default applications, replacing it with Ubuntu Software Center and Ubuntu's Update Manager.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://netupd8.com/w8img2/gs-usc.png"><img alt="Ubuntu GNOME Remix Software Center" src="http://netupd8.com/w8img2/gs-usc_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">According to a <a href="https://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/msg00145.html">post</a> on a mailing list by Jeremy Bicha, the main Ubuntu GNOME developer, GNOME Packagekit is currently "<i>pretty disappointing</i>", while Ubuntu Software Center is "<i>one of Ubuntu's best features with ratings and reviews, screenshots, app icons, access to commercial software, and decent search</i>", so even though this change will slightly affect the pure GNOME3 desktop experience that Ubuntu GNOME Remix is trying to achieve, it will definitely provide a better overall default experience.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Further more, this won't be the first GNOME distribution that ships with its own software management application: Mageia and openSUSE do this too.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Also, as you probably know, Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10 includes the classic session by default (along with GNOME Shell, which is the default session, obviously). Well, the same 13.04 update brought another pretty major change: even though Ubuntu 13.04 is likely to <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/ubuntu-1304-only-some-gnome-components.html">ship with GNOME 3.6 for the most part</a>, and not 3.8 (which will remove the fallback session), <b>the classic (fallback) session packages were removed from the default Ubuntu GNOME Remix 13.04 Raring Ringtail installation</b>.</div>

Install PPA-Purge With Multi-Arch Support In Ubuntu

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The ppa-purge package available in the official Ubuntu repositories is not multi-arch aware</b>, so purging PPAs like <a href="https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa">xorg-edgers</a> or <a href="https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3">gnome3</a> doesn't work correctly on 64bit systems.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">A few hours ago, thanks to Tim Lunn's work, <b>a branch that adds multiarch support has been merged into the main ppa-purge branch, fixing this <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ppa-purge/+bug/892886">bug</a></b>. The fix should be available in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail soon, but I don't know if it will be backported for older Ubuntu versions so to make this fix available for Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 users, <b>I've uploaded the latest ppa-purge</b> from BZR <b>to the main WebUpd8 PPA</b>.</div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">For those not familiar with PPA Purge, this is a <b>command line tool that downgrades all the packages installed from a PPA to the versions available in the official Ubuntu repositories</b>. </div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">As an example, if you've added the GNOME 3 PPA, using "sudo ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3" in Ubuntu 12.10 will downgrade GNOME Control Center from version 3.6.3 (which is currently available in the PPA) to the 3.4.2 version (which is available in the official Ubuntu 12.10 repositories); PPA Purge will do this for all the packages available in that PPA like Nautilus, Totem and so on, which are installed on your system. Until now, Calendar Indicator would only display Google Calendar events in the indicator menu and through notifications. Install MPlayer With VA-API (Hardware Acceleration For Intel / AMD GPUs) Support In Ubuntu

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>VA-API is an open source library/API which enables hardware accelerated video processing. It uses the GPU to accelerate video processing in order to offload the CPU.</b><br /><br />Supported hardware includes <b>Intel HD Graphics and G45 chipsets and newer</b> as well as <b>AMD Radeon GPUs</b> (there's also a Nvidia VDPAU backend for VA-API). <b>You can find a list of supported hardware, drivers and video codecs <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Acceleration_API#Supported_hardware_and_drivers" rel="nofollow">HERE</a></b>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Here's an example: on my laptop (Ubuntu), the CPU usage is around 40-50% when watching an 1080p H.264 video using MPlayer without VA-API and around 2-5% when watching the same 1080p video using MPlayer with VA-API. Primus: Better Performance And Less Power Consumption For Bumblebee [Optimus Hybrid Graphics Chipsets]

<div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Nvidia Optimus is a technology used to increases battery life by switching between two graphics adapters (a low-performance integrated Intel graphics adapter and a high-performance one by Nvidia) within a computer system. Optimus GPU switching is officially only supported on Windows, but it's also unofficially available on Linux thanks to the Bumblebee project.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="https://github.com/amonakov/primus">Primus</a> brings better performance and less power consumption when using <a href="http://www.bumblebee-project.org/">Bumblebee</a></b>, by replacing VirtualGL. According to the Bumblebee <a href="http://www.bumblebee-project.org/g+">G+</a> page, this has the following <b>advantages over the optirun (VirtualGL) solution</b> used by default in Bumblebee:</div><a name='more'></a><ul><li>Less overhead (better framerates) and cleaner solution (no networking or compression involved at all)</li><li>Fixes the "bug" that causes Bumblebee to shut down the GPU too early sometimes (no more need for the "optirun bash" workaround)</li><li>Less buggy/glitchy, easier to debug</li><li>Only uses/starts secondary GPU for OpenGL parts of applications - everything else remains on your main GPU (power savings)</li></ul><br />The Bumblebee developers explain what Primus does and the difference between Primus / optirun in simple terms in a comment on their G+ page:<br /><br /><blockquote>Bumblebee uses VirtualGL to copy the image generated by the second (faster) GPU to your display. VirtualGL was intended for use over a network though, so it takes a great many steps to enable this (compression, sending the image over a network link, decompression, etc).<br /><br />Primus doesn't perform all these "extra" steps, instead taking a more direct route (copying the rendered image in memory to the other GPU, then displaying there). In theory this should get you better performance as well as better compatibility. How To Use Hybrid Suspend In Ubuntu

<b>Firstly, here's what hybrid suspend does:</b><br /><ul><li>initially, the computer is suspended to RAM, which is quick to suspend / resume but it also uses some power</li><li>if the computer doesn't wake up after a configurable amount of time, suspend to disk is used so the computer stops using any power (it's the same as if it was powered off) - this is also known as hibernation</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Basically, <b>using the hybrid suspend method from this article, the system initially enters suspend which is quick to resume and after the time you set, the system hibernates so it no longer uses any battery power</b>. Also, there's no way to change these in Switchboard, but you can use the same tools that are available for Ubuntu if you want to do this.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Since it's based on top of Ubuntu 12.04, Luna uses the Linux kernel 3.2.0-32, Xorg 1.11.4 and GTK 3.4.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Conclusions</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">elementary OS 0.2 Luna beta 1 is not only beautiful, but it's also fast, lightweight and uses a consistent look throughout most of its default applications. And this is just the first beta, so Luna should improve further until the final release, for which, by the way, the date is not yet known.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The decision to drop Compiz and use Gala (which uses libmutter) by default seems very inspired because Gala offers a nice touch to the desktop with its beautiful animations: not too intrusive but also not something that goes unnoticed, along with cool workspace switcher and expose features. And on top of that, it seems quite stable too.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The default applications are extremely fast and lightweight, especially those developed by the elementary OS team - maybe too lightweight for some users (read: lack of options), but hey, you can't have it all. </div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Download elementary OS 0.2 Luna beta 1</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>elementary OS 0.2 Luna is in beta, so you will find bugs!
