How To Disable Recursive Search In Nautilus 3.6 or 3.8 [Patch w/ PPA]

<div style="text-align: justify;">The type-ahead find feature was removed from Nautilus starting with version 3.6. Now when typing in a Nautilus (3.6+) window, it performs a search in the current directory and all subdirectories instead of selecting the file or folder that matches what you've typed. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This feature is not that bad except for one thing: searching in subdirectories makes it pretty much unusable at times. Using the default Nautilus 3.8 (Ubuntu Saucy), a lot of files show up when typing "gen" which is confusing and makes it harder to spot the file I was looking for. Using the patched Nautilus, only the <i>genymotion</i> folder and the <i>genymotion-1.2.1_x64.bin</i> file show up so I immediately spot the file I was looking for.<br /><br />This may not be the best example, but I'm sure many of you have noticed how annoying the recursive search is in many situations.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If you prefer the old type-ahead find feature, unfortunately there's no way of getting it in Nautilus 3.6+, at least not yet. But there are some other alternatives, like downgrading to <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/04/get-nautilus-34-features-back-in-ubuntu.html" title="Get Nautilus 3.4 Features Back In Ubuntu 13.04 With SolusOS Patched Nautilus">Nautilus 3.4</a>, using <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-install-nemo-file-manager-in.html" title="How To Install Nemo File Manager In Ubuntu">Nemo file manager</a>, etc.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Install Nautilus patched to allow enabling/disabling recursive search</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">To be able to disable recursive search in Nautilus 3.6 or 3.8, you can either patch Nautilus yourself - the patch can be found <a href="https://code.launchpad.net/~dr3mro/nautilus/fix-1164016">HERE</a>, or use Amr Osman's PPA to install an already patched Nautilus.<br /><br /><b>To add the PPA (for Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10) and upgrade Nautilus, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dr3mro/personal<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get upgrade</code></pre><br />Once Nautilus is upgraded successfully, restart it:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>nautilus -q</code></pre><br />Then, disable recursive search using the following command:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences enable-recursive-search false</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If later on you want to re-enable recursive search, use the command below:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences enable-recursive-search true</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">You can also change this setting via Dconf-editor (make sure dconf-tools is installed: "sudo apt-get install dconf-tools"), by navigating to: <i>org > gnome > nautilus > preferences</i> where you should find the "enable-recursive-search" option.</div><br />

How To Install Nemo File Manager In Ubuntu

<div style="text-align: justify;">After forking GNOME Shell (Cinnamon), Mutter (Muffin) and GDM 2.0 (MDM), the Linux Mint team has forked Nautilus and the result is <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/08/nemo-linux-mint-team-forks-nautilus.html" title="Nemo: The Linux Mint Team Forks Nautilus">Nemo</a>, a file manager which is now used by default in Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/nemo-file-manager.png" rel="image_group" title="Nemo file manager - latest code from GIT"><img alt="Nemo file manager git" src="http://img.netupd8.com/nemo-file-manager_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Initially, Nemo used to look the same as the patched <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/how-to-install-nautilus-36-or-patched.html" title="How To Install Nautilus 3.6 Or Patched Nautilus 3.4 In Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal">SolusOS Nautilus</a> so I didn't write about how to install it since it was basically the same thing under a different name.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But Nemo has evolved, gaining many new features and under the hood optimizations and tweaks.<b> Here are some of the features available for Nemo file manager (for the version available in GIT / Cinnamon Nightly PPA) that aren't included in Nautilus 3.4:</b></div><a name='more'></a><ul><li>Unified, configurable toolbar: you can add/remove the following: up icon, refresh icon, toggle button for the location bar / path bar, home icon, computer icon and search icon.</li><li>Detachable tabs</li><li>Option to show the full path in the titlebar and tab bars (<i>Preferences > Display</i>)</li><li>Displays an "elevated privileges" banner when running as root</li><li>Built in "Open as root" context menu item</li><li>Built in "Open in terminal" context menu item</li><li>Added GTK bookmarks to the MoveTo/CopyTo context menus</li><li>Added "Set as Wallpaper" to the context menu</li><li>Switch view buttons on the toolbar (Grid, List and Compact views)</li><li>Drag and drop support for the bookmarks in the sidebar</li><li>Sidebar: indicators under each drive, displaying the free/used space</li><li>Collapsable sidebar categories</li><li>Support for sending files via Thunderbird and xdg-email</li><li>Image properties improvements (merged from Nautilus 3.6)</li><li>Memory leaks fixes (merged from Nautilus 3.6)</li><li>More!</li></ul><br />And Nemo has another advantage: it doesn't overwrite Nautilus like the patched SolusOS Nautilus, so you can have both Nautilus and Nemo installed in the same time.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The Linux Mint / Nemo developers have also ported some Nautilus extensions to Nemo: there's a Dropbox extension for Nemo, along with Pastebin, Seahorse, Fileroller and Samba extensions.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Below you'll find some more Nemo screenshots - in the first one there's Nemo 1.1.2 (stable) and the rest feature the latest Nemo from GIT:</div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto;
