The fonts don't look like that when using Cinnamon.<br /><br /><br /><br /><h2>What's new in Cinnamon 1.8</h2><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Cinnamon 1.8 no longer uses gnome-session for fallback which has advantages such as the ability to restart Cinnamon after a crash or the use of a wrapper which allows Cinnamon to restart itself after potential crashes. This should also fix the issue with Cinnamon not working on some hardware which was actually capable of running it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Cinnamon 1.8 comes with its own Control Center</b>, so there's no longer the need to use GNOME Control Center. This is especially useful if you have installed multiple desktop environments: features that are GNOME Shell or Unity specific don't show up in Cinnamon Control Center, so you should now have a more clean, less confusing settings app. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In Cinnamon Settings you can find all the GNOME settings that also apply to Cinnamon as well as Cinnamon-specific settings such as applets, desklets, theme settings, windows behavior, hot corners setup, panel settings and more:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-system-settings.png" rel="image_group"><img alt="Cinnamon Control Center" src="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-system-settings_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">By default, Cinnamon Control Center displays only some of the system settings and for more advanced settings you must click the "Switch to Advanced Mode" button in the lower left corner.</div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The <b>Cinnamon Screensaver</b> about which we were telling you <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/work-started-on-cinnamon-screensaver.html">a while back</a>, is available by default with Cinnamon 1.8. The screensaver is very simplistic, displaying the date and time on a shaded background and optionally, it can also display an away message:</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-screensaver.png" rel="image_group"><img alt="Cinnamon Screensaver" src="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-screensaver_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-screensaver-settings.png" rel="image_group"><img alt="Cinnamon screensaver settings" src="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-screensaver-settings_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The new Cinnamon release also introduces "<b>Desklets</b>" (<b>desktop widgets</b>), but since this is a new feature, there are only a few available for now:</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-desklets.png" rel="image_group"><img alt="Cinnamon Desklets" src="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-desklets_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-desklets-settings.png" rel="image_group"><img alt="Cinnamon desklets settings" src="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-desklets-settings_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The desklets can be set to snap to a desklets grid so they align nicely, with configurable grid width and users can also select if the desklets should use a border, border and header or no decoration at all.</div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Another interesting new feature in Cinnamon 1.8 is that you can <b>install or update "spices" (which include applets, desklets, themes or extensions) directly from the desktop</b>, via Cinnamon Control Center, so Cinnamon users no longer need to manually download and install them from  http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com:</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-applets-install-online.png" rel="image_group"><img alt="Cinnamon 1.8 applets install" src="http://img.netupd8.com/cinnamon-1.8-applets-install-online_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">In my test, installing themes didn't work for some reason, maybe because the available themes aren't compatible with the latest Cinnamon 1.8 yet, but I was able to successfully install applets and desklets.</div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">And finally, <b>Nemo, the default Cinnamon file manager, has received many improvements </b>since the previous stable release that's available in Linux Mint 14 (1.1.2), such as:</div><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">buttons in the statusbar to easily hide the sidebar and switch between places and treeview (sidebar);</li><li style="text-align: justify;">option to hide the menu;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">collapsable sidebar categories;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">breadcrumbs;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Sidebar Disk Indicators: indicators are displayed under each drive, displaying the free/used space;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">various fixes and more.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Latest Nemo File Manager From GIT Gets Breadcrumbs, Option To Hide The Menu, More

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-install-nemo-file-manager-in.html" title="How To Install Nemo File Manager In Ubuntu">Nemo</a>, the default Linux Mint (Cinnamon) file manager, forked from Nautilus 3.4, has got a lot of interesting changes in GIT recently.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The most visible change is the <b>addition of breadcrumbs</b> which look great if you're using the Mint-X theme (default Linux Mint theme, also available in the <a href="https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/themes">WebUpd8 Themes Repository</a>) as you can see below:</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/nemo-file-manager-latest.png" rel="image_group" title="Nemo file manager"><img alt="Nemo file manager" src="http://img.netupd8.com/nemo-file-manager-latest_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">Other themes need to be tweaked to correctly display the new Nemo breadcrumbs, although with some themes like <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/beautiful-mediterraneannight-gtk-36.html" title="Beautiful MediterraneanNight GTK 3.6 Theme Pack Updated">MediterraneanNight</a> or <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/8-gtk-36-compatible-themes-available-in.html" title="8 GTK 3.6 Compatible Themes Available In PPAs For Ubuntu 12.10">Evolve</a>, it doesn't look that bad (it looks pretty bad with some themes though, like Ambiance):</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; How To Install Nemo File Manager In Ubuntu

<div style="text-align: justify;">After forking GNOME Shell (Cinnamon), Mutter (Muffin) and GDM 2.0 (MDM), the Linux Mint team has forked Nautilus and the result is <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/08/nemo-linux-mint-team-forks-nautilus.html" title="Nemo: The Linux Mint Team Forks Nautilus">Nemo</a>, a file manager which is now used by default in Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/nemo-file-manager.png" rel="image_group" title="Nemo file manager - latest code from GIT"><img alt="Nemo file manager git" src="http://img.netupd8.com/nemo-file-manager_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Initially, Nemo used to look the same as the patched <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/how-to-install-nautilus-36-or-patched.html" title="How To Install Nautilus 3.6 Or Patched Nautilus 3.4 In Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal">SolusOS Nautilus</a> so I didn't write about how to install it since it was basically the same thing under a different name.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But Nemo has evolved, gaining many new features and under the hood optimizations and tweaks.<b> Here are some of the features available for Nemo file manager (for the version available in GIT / Cinnamon Nightly PPA) that aren't included in Nautilus 3.4:</b></div><a name='more'></a><ul><li>Unified, configurable toolbar: you can add/remove the following: up icon, refresh icon, toggle button for the location bar / path bar, home icon, computer icon and search icon.</li><li>Detachable tabs</li><li>Option to show the full path in the titlebar and tab bars (<i>Preferences > Display</i>)</li><li>Displays an "elevated privileges" banner when running as root</li><li>Built in "Open as root" context menu item</li><li>Built in "Open in terminal" context menu item</li><li>Added GTK bookmarks to the MoveTo/CopyTo context menus</li><li>Added "Set as Wallpaper" to the context menu</li><li>Switch view buttons on the toolbar (Grid, List and Compact views)</li><li>Drag and drop support for the bookmarks in the sidebar</li><li>Sidebar: indicators under each drive, displaying the free/used space</li><li>Collapsable sidebar categories</li><li>Support for sending files via Thunderbird and xdg-email</li><li>Image properties improvements (merged from Nautilus 3.6)</li><li>Memory leaks fixes (merged from Nautilus 3.6)</li><li>More!</li></ul><br />And Nemo has another advantage: it doesn't overwrite Nautilus like the patched SolusOS Nautilus, so you can have both Nautilus and Nemo installed in the same time.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The Linux Mint / Nemo developers have also ported some Nautilus extensions to Nemo: there's a Dropbox extension for Nemo, along with Pastebin, Seahorse, Fileroller and Samba extensions.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Below you'll find some more Nemo screenshots - in the first one there's Nemo 1.1.2 (stable) and the rest feature the latest Nemo from GIT:</div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto;
