<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/">Cinnamon</a> 2.0 has been released today featuring many bug fixes as well as some new features.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">According to the release <a href="http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2013/10/cinnamon-2-0-released/">announcement</a>, with version 2.0, Cinnamon is no longer a frontend ontop of the GNOME desktop like Unity or GNOME Shell, but "<i>an entire desktop environment</i>". In Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) you can't remove the Shopping lens but there is another way to achieve the same thing and it seems this isn't obvious because I've seen quite a few users complaining about it. Ubuntu 13.10 comes with a feature called <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/unity-smart-scopes-feature-lands-in.html">Unity Smart Scopes</a> (or "100 scopes") which uses a huge list of scopes to display results in Dash and among these, there are some used for shopping. According to its homepage, SparkleShare and is great for frequently changing project files like text, office documents and so on, but not for large music/photo collections, large binary files hat change often and so on (because it uses Git which doesn't handle binaries very well).</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">A <b>new SparkleShare version</b> has been released recently: <b>1.2.0</b>, which includes mostly bug fixes, such as:</div><ul><li>Fixes to the invite feature, now works when SparkleShare isn't running yet;</li><li>Fix some interface logic in Add dialog;</li><li>Fix some inaccurate sync state messages in the status icon;</li><li>Fix conflict when running when TortoiseGit is installed;</li><li>Fix crash when user cancels initial project download;</li><li>Fix Continue button not enabling when entering encryption password;</li><li>Fix Planio plugin name showing up as Gitorious on Linux;</li><li>Show download speed on initial project add.</li></ul><br /><br /><h2>Install SparkleShare in Ubuntu</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">SparkleShare is available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but it hasn't been updated in a while (for instance, the current version in Ubuntu Saucy is 0.9) so to install the latest version, you can use an unofficial PPA. How To Install GNOME 3.10 In Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander

Unfortunately, the PPA currently only has a few packages: GNOME Shell (including the official extensions), GNOME Themes, GTK3, Mutter, Clutter, Network Manager, Vala, Wayland and WebkitGTK so basically, to get a GNOME 3.10 desktop which includes System Settings, the core apps, etc., you must also add the <a href="https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3-staging">GNOME 3 Staging PPA</a> which contains packages that have known bugs and regressions, "sometimes of critical nature" mentions the PPA description.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">In my test (I'm using GNOME 3.10 right now on my main computer) under Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, I've added both the GNOME 3 Next PPA and the GNOME 3 Staging PPA and I've <span style="color: red;"><b>encountered the following issues:</b></span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><b>LightDM doesn't work</b> so if you plan on using these PPAs, make sure you switch to GDM prior to upgrading;</li><li><b>using these PPAs pretty much breaks Unity</b>: the AppIndicators don't work, the applications don't show up in Dash, the mouse is invisible (update: this invisible mouse issue can be fixed by using the following command: "gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.cursor active false"), the new CSD applications don't have shadows and there are probably other issues too but I've only used Unity for a few minutes. So only add these PPAs for now if you don't have Unity installed or you don't plan on using Unity;</li><li>some applications may not work properly or not work at all - in my test, Synapse stopped working while gThumb doesn't display the thumbnails properly.</li></ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: red;"><b>So only follow the instructions below if you know what you're doing and know how to use PPA-Purge to revert the changes in case something goes wrong!</b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>What will be upgraded:</b> by using the instructions below, besides GNOME Shell (and the default extensions), GDM, GTK, GNOME Control Center, etc. and various libraries, the following applications will be upgraded to version 3.10.0: Cheese, Eye Of GNOME, Evince, Gedit, Boxes, Clocks, Contacts, Documents, Font Viewer, System Monitor, Terminal, Tweak Tool, Weather and Files (Nautilus). Web (Epiphany) won't be upgraded to version 3.10 for now, but to 3.9.91. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>What won't be upgraded to version 3.10:</b> unfortunately, the other GNOME 3.10 applications are missing from these PPAs: Music, Notes (Bijben - version 3.8.4 is available in the official repositories), Maps, Photos and Software. Totem won't be upgraded for now either.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>That said, let's proceed to upgrading GNOME to the latest 3.10 version in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander.</b></div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Upgrade To GNOME 3.10 In Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander</h2><br /><b>1. Switch to GDM if you're not using it already.</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Like I was telling you above, in my test LightDM didn't work after using the two GNOME3 PPAs, so install GDM if it's not already installed:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install gdm</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">And select GDM instead of LightDM when prompted.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If you want to switch between LightDM, GDM, etc. see <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2011/07/how-to-switch-between-gdm-lightdm-or.html" title="How To Switch Between GDM, LightDM, MDM Or KDM In Ubuntu">THESE</a> instructions.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>2. Restart the computer.</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">For me, restarting via the system menu didn't work so if that happens for you too, reboot via command line:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo reboot</code></pre><br />And in the login screen, select the "GNOME" session. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Ambiance doesn't work properly with applications that use client side decorations so if you were using it, change to Adwaita theme using GNOME Tweak Tool (the application should have been installed with the last command from step 2 above). Even the Tunlr <a href="http://tunlr.net/faq/">FAQ</a> page says you shouldn't use the Tunlr DNS for every day web surfing. On Windows, there are some tools you can use to quickly switch the Tunlr DNS on/off, but there's no such tool for Linux, so <b>here's how to properly use Tunlr under Linux</b>.</div><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><h2>Configure Tunlr DNS under Linux</h2><br />Before proceeding, please note that <b>Tunlr recommends using Firefox</b> and also, <b>Google Chrome is not supported</b>! <br /><br /><b>Below you'll find two ways of setting up the Tunlr DNS under Linux. </b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The first one (A)</b> has an advantage over the one (script) below: the Tunlr DNS is only used for Netflix, Hulu, etc. while using the default DNS for other websites. There's a drawback too though: if Tunlr changes the DNS servers, you must edit the <i>/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d/dnsmasq.conf</i> and manually add the <a href="http://tunlr.net/get-started/">new DNS</a>. Update: I've added a script at the bottom of method A for automatically retrieving and updating the Tunlr DNS (thanks to Jochen Blacha!).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The second (B)</b> method has the advantage of always setting the correct Tunlr DNS servers since it automatically retrieves them from the Tunlr website (the DNS servers have changed quite a few times already). The disadvantage is that when switching Tunlr on using this script, all the traffic passes through the Tunlr DNS and not only the websites that need it, like it's done using the first method. But you can do this: only browse the websites you wouldn't normally have access to when switching the Tunlr DNS on and when you want to visit some other websites, switch the Tunlr DNS off.</div><br />With these in mind, use the configuration method that suits you best.<br /><br /><br /><b>A. Configure Tunlr DNS using Dnsmasq / Network Manager</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">In Ubuntu 12.04+, Network Manager uses dnsmasq by default so the instructions below are specific to Ubuntu users. For other Linux distributions, you can simply paste the code below (the two lines containing "server="...) in <i>/etc/dnsmasq.conf </i>and restart Dnsmasq. I only tested it in Ubuntu though.</div><br />Let's proceed. Firstly, create the <i>/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d</i> folder (I believe it's not created by default in Ubuntu 12.04 for instance):<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo mkdir -p /etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d</code></pre><br />Then, create (edit) a file called "dnsmasq.conf" under <i>/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d/</i>.
