Use Monochrome Icons For The Steam Ubuntu AppIndicator [Quick Tip]

A quick tip for those of you who are using Steam for Linux in Ubuntu: you've probably noticed that Steam for Linux has recently got an AppIndicator, but its icon doesn't integrate with the default Ubuntu icons, so here's how to use Ubuntu Mono dark / light icons for the Steam AppIndicator.

Below you can see how the original Steam for Linux appindicator icon looks like:

And this is how it will look after the changes below with the Ubuntu-mono-dark icon theme:

And with the Ubuntu-mono-light icon theme:

To get monochrome icons for Steam when using the default Ubuntu Mono Dark / Light icon themes, use the following commands:

For Ubuntu Mono Dark (dark panels, light icons):

cd && wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/vzve0qrugp2mf5c/steam48.png
sudo mv ./steam48.png /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-dark/apps/48/steam_tray.png
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache --ignore-theme-index -f /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-dark

For Ubuntu Mono Light (light panels, dark icons):

cd && wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/zygq15nfa11epdu/steam48.png
sudo mv ./steam48.png /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-light/apps/48/steam_tray.png
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache --ignore-theme-index -f /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-light

It make take a few seconds for the Steam appindicator icon to change to the new one. If it doesn't, you can try to change the icon theme to something else, then change back to Ubuntu-mono-dark or Ubuntu-mono-light (use a tool such as Unsettings, Ubuntu Tweak or GNOME Tweak tool to change the icon theme).

Icons via blog.ants.im (created by WantsANexus7 and Oweoqi), but I've used different instructions which don't force an icon to be used no matter what icon theme is in use.
