Nautilus 3.6: How To Clear The Recent Files List (Or Disable It)

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a title="Install Nautilus 3.6 Ubuntu" href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/how-to-install-nautilus-36-or-patched.html">Nautilus 3.6</a> comes with a "Recent" sidebar item (left sidebar: <i>Places > Recent</i>) which displays recently used files: documents, pictures, music, videos and so on. </b></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent.png"><img alt="Nautilus Recent files" src="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">This is a pretty big privacy issue because there's no option in System Settings (GNOME Control Center) to clear the Nautilus recent files list or to disable it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>So here's how to clear this Nautilus Recent files list and optionally, how to completely disable it.</b></div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><h2>Clear the Nautilus Recent Files list</h2><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent-cleared.png"><img alt="Nautilus Recent files clear" src="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent-cleared_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>To clear the Nautilus "Recent" files</b>, you need to remove the "<i>~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel</i>" file - to do this from the command line, copy/paste the command below in a terminal:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>rm ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel</code></pre><br />Then, log out an log back in. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Restarting Nautilus didn't always work in my test, that's why I've recommended logging out and logging back in. After removing the "<i>~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel</i>" file, you can also clear the Recent files list by opening a file that's not in your recent files list. I know, this weird, but that's how it seems to work or at least, that's the behaviour I've experienced in my test.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Disable the Nautilus Recent Files list</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>To permanently disable any recent files from showing up in the Nautilus Recent sidebar item</b>, open the "<i>~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini</i>" file with a text editor:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>gedit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini</code></pre><br />and under "[Settings]", add the following lines:<br /><pre class="source-code"><code>gtk-recent-files-max-age=0<br />gtk-recent-files-limit=0</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>If this file does not exist, create it</b>. Make sure the header says "[Settings]" and not "Settings". Zukitwo, Adwaita Cupertino Themes Ported To GTK 3.6

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Two pretty popular GTK3 themes have been updated to work with the latest stable GTK 3.6 recently: Zukitwo and Adwaita Cupertino (now called Gnome Cupertino).</b></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Gnome Cupertino (previously known as Adwaita Cupertino) </b>is a GTK2/3 theme pack based on the colors of Mac OSX Snow Leopard and Lion, each with variations optimized for either GNOME Shell or Unity.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/gnome-cupertino.png" rel="image_group" title="Gnome Cupertino GTK 3.6 theme"><img alt="Gnome Cupertino theme" src="http://img.netupd8.com/gnome-cupertino_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">Because Adwaita Cupertino was practically re-written from scratch in the transition to GTK 3.6 and also, since the theme doesn't uses the Adwaita Engine for several versions, its designer decided to rename it to Gnome Cupertino.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The package available in our PPA has two themes: the default Gnome Cupertino and a variant optimized for Unity, but inside the theme folder (e.g. /usr/share/themes/Gnome-Cupertino) you'll find some alternate Metacity / Unity buttons which you can use, but you must make the changes manually - see the readme.txt file inside the theme folder. In the same file you can also tweak the theme to use a custom style for Nautilus 3.4 because by default, it's optimized for Nautilus 3.6.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Since the theme has just been ported to GTK 3.6, there are some bugs. For instance, the GNOME Classic indicators have a weird white border at the bottom. Ubuntu GNOME Remix 13.04 Replaces GNOME Packagekit With Ubuntu Software Center

GNOME Shell 3.8 To Get A `Classic` Mode
