Sublime Text 3 Beta Available For Download

<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.sublimetext.com/">Sublime Text</a> is probably among the best text/code editors available for Linux, and it's cross-platform so it works on Windows and Mac OS X too. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sublime Text 2 stable was released about 7 months ago and since then, its developer has been working on a new version: <a href="http://www.sublimetext.com/blog/articles/sublime-text-3-beta">Sublime Text 3</a>. Even though Sublime Text is not free, up until now, users could evaluate it for an unlimited period of time which basically meant you didn't really had to buy it unless you wanted to support the developer. Also, the new version comes with new features such as Goto Definition and Goto Symbol, speed improvements, improved pane management, symbol indexing and many other changes about which you can read <a href="http://www.sublimetext.com/blog/articles/sublime-text-3-beta">HERE</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But this is not all, since Sublime Text 3 is currently in beta, it should improve quite a lot until the final release - if you've used the alpha and beta Sublime Text 2 builds, you're probably aware of how fast new builds are released.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I maintain a Sublime Text 2 PPA but I won't be uploading any Sublime Text 3 builds yet, given that it can't be evaluated for an unlimited period of time (for free) any more. I-Nex: Tool To List Hardware Information In Linux, Similar To CPU-Z

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="https://launchpad.net/i-nex">I-Nex</a> is an application that gathers information for hardware components available on your system and displays it using an user interface similar to the popular Windows tool CPU-Z.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I-Nex can display information for the following components: CPU, GPU, Motherboard, Sound, Hard disks, RAM, Network and USB as well as some system info like the hostname, Linux distribution and version, Xorg, GCC, GLX versions and Linux Kernel info.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Besides being able to display hardware information, I-Nex can also generate an advanced report for which you can select what to include and optionally send the report to a service such as Pastebin (and others). It also features an option to take a screenshot of the I-Nex window directly from the application.</div><a name="more"></a><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The difference between I-Nex and the other hardware information GUI tools available for Linux (we <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2011/07/how-to-get-hardware-information-in.html">wrote</a> about some of them a while back) is that the information is better organized and is displayed faster (than lshw-gtk for instance). To add both PPAs and install I-Nex in Ubuntu 12.04 and newer, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nemh/gambas3<br />sudo add-apt-repository ppa:i-nex-development-team/stable<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install i-nex</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Then, launch I-Nex from the menu / Dash.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Arch Linux users can install the latest I-Nex from BZR via <a href="https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/i-nex-bzr/">AUR</a>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">For other Linux distributions, download the I-Nex source from <a href="https://launchpad.net/i-nex/+download">Launchpad</a>. But remember that you need a pretty new Gambas3 for I-Nex to work (I've tested it with Gambas3 3.3.4). Upgrade To Gvfs With MTP Support In Ubuntu 12.10 Or 12.04 To Easily Connect Android 4.0+ Devices

<div style="text-align: justify;">Like I was telling you <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/unity-changes-ubuntu-1304-raring.html">a while back</a>, <b>Gvfs has been <a href="https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/gvfs/+changelog">updated</a> in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, bringing a new MTP backend which allows users to access Android 4.0 devices which do not support the USB Mass Storage</b> protocol, along with many other changes. If you upgrade to the backported packages in this PPA, you'll get seamless MTP support so when you connect an Android 4.0 device via USB, it should automatically show up in Nautilus (or Thunar, it should work with it too) without having to manually mount it. You'll also be able to unmount it from Nautilus.<br /><br />I've tested the packages on Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 with my Samsung Galaxy S2 (Android 4.2.1) and Gvfs has worked as expected (with some minor issues though, see below) and I was able to transfer files to my Android 4.2.1 phone.<br /><br />Also, the packages were <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/112555004333838485342/posts/TLWjkGzDCFs">tested</a> by WebUpd8 reader Bhaismachine (thank you!) in Ubuntu 12.10 using a Nexus 4 and he reported that the device showed up in Nautilus and further more, it seemed faster than before.<br /><br /><b>Issues:</b> transferring music using Rhythmbox or Clementine didn't work in my test (including in Ubuntu 13.04 - I've reported the bug <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/1108104">HERE</a>), but <a href="http://i.imgur.com/P1tycS3.png">it did work</a> with Clementine for Bhaismachine. So this part doesn't seem too reliable for now. Also, by default the image thumbnails are not displayed in Nautilus - <b>to enable image thumbnails</b>, open the Nautilus preferences and on the "Preview" tab, select "Always" for "Show thumbnails" under "Other Previewable Files".<br /><br />for some reason, there are no thumbnails for images on the Android device in Nautilus and the images can't be opened directly from the device but copying and viewing them on the computer works. These issues aren't Ubuntu 12.10 or 12.04 specific and they even occur in Ubuntu 13.04.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In other related news, the latest CyanogenMod 10.1 nightly has added an option for switching between UMS and MTP/PTP mode (<i>System Settings > Storage</i>), so you can now mount Android devices via USB mass storage in Ubuntu. That means you won't need Gvfs with MTP support if you're using the latest CM nightly.</div><br /><br /><h2>Upgrade Gvfs in Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 to get Android 4.0 support for devices which don't support USB Mass Storage interface</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The packages in this PPA may be unstable. Use the PPA at your own risk! There are instructions on how to revert the changes at the bottom of the post.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>1.</b> <b>To add the Gvfs (and libmtp) PPA created by the Gvfs MTP backend developer in Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:langdalepl/gvfs-mtp<br />sudo apt-get update</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>2. Then, launch Software Updater (previously known as Update Manager) and install the available updates</b>.<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>3. </b>Once everything has been updated successfully,<b> restart your computer</b>, <b>unlock your Android device</b>, connect it via USB and it should show up in your file manager (tested with Nautilus and Thunar 1.6).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If you don't unlock the Android 4.0+ device, it may show up as empty in the file manager, at least that was the case for me. <br /><br /><b>Update</b> 13 February 2013: If your device is not currently supported, check out <a href="http://ppa.webupd8.org/post/43022082410/libmtp-updated-for-ubuntu-quantal-and-precise-with">THIS</a> list and if your device is on that list, add our <a href="https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/unstable">Unstable PPA</a> and upgrade libmtp (I've backported the latest libmtp from Raring to Quantal and Precise in this PPA).</div><br /><br /><h2>Revert the changes (purge the PPA)</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">To revert the changes (downgrade all the packages from our Gvfs PPA to the version available in the official Ubuntu repositories), firstly <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/11/install-ppa-purge-with-multi-arch.html">install PPA-Purge with multi-arch support</a> from the main WebUpd8 PPA.</div><br />Then, purge the PPA using the following command:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo ppa-purge ppa:langdalepl/gvfs-mtp </code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Wait for the packages to be downgraded successfully, restart the computer and everything should go back to the way it was before adding the Gvfs PPA above.</div></div>

Eclipse IDE: Get Ubuntu AppMenu And HUD Support

<div style="text-align: justify;">By default, the popular Eclipse IDE does not support the Ubuntu AppMenu or  <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/hud-ubuntus-new-smart-menus-announced.html">HUD</a>. The reason for this is that Eclipse has been <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdbusmenu/+bug/618587">blacklisted</a> so it wouldn't use the AppMenu around the time of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat because it didn't work back then.<br /><br />Now Eclipse does work with the AppMenu, however, there are some minor glitches like some menu shortcuts not being displayed (although they do work). Now let's whielist Eclipse so it supports AppMenu and HUD:</b><br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo sed -i 's/Eclipse/Xclipse/g' <b>/path/to/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/</b>libappmenu.so</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>For the last to commands above, remember to use the exact path to the GtK2 libappmenu.so you've found under step 1!</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Alternatively, you can also use <a href="https://launchpad.net/~absinthesyringe/+archive/eclipse">a PPA</a> which comes with a package that basically  runs all these commands automatically but: the PPA may give you the wrong impression that if you remove the package, everything is reverted and in fact it's not; also, </i><i>you'll still have to reinstall the package if Appmenu Gtk2 is updated (so by the way, you'll have to follow these instructions again if that package is updated); and finally, </i><i>the PPA package doesn't work correctly for Ubuntu 12.04. That's why I've preferred the manual instructions over the PPA.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>That's it!
