It comes with a free implementations of ImageX called "wimlib-imagex", available for both Linux and Windows.</b></div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>WIM is a file-based disk image format developed by Microsoft for Windows Vista and later. The Windows Setup DVD uses such files for the installation process. Using it from Linux, you can back up, install or restore Windows directly from a WIM file.<br /><br /><br />Extracting a WIM file can also be achieved by using p7zip (for example, you can extract a WIM file using Archive Manager, by renaming the file extension to .7z, or you can do it via command line, using "7z") however, the latest stable p7zip 9.20.1 seems to <a href="http://sourceforge.net/p/sevenzip/discussion/45797/thread/5f112d0a/">fail</a> with Windows 8 WIM images. Wimlib on the other hand should handle Windows 8 WIM files properly.</div><br /><br /><b>Wimlib features (via Wimlib Sourceforge <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/wimlib/?source=dlp">page</a>):</b><br /><ul><li>Support for both Linux and Windows;</li><li>Apply/extract an image from a WIM file to a directory;</li><li>Apply/extract an image from a WIM file directly to a NTFS volume;</li><li>Capture a directory tree as a WIM image in a new or existing WIM;</li><li>Capture a NTFS volume as a WIM image in a new or existing WIM;</li><li>Mount an image from a WIM file read-only or read-write (Linux only);</li><li>Add or delete files from a WIM image without mounting it;</li><li>Extract individual files or directories without mounting it;</li><li>Delete an image from a WIM file;</li><li>Display information about a WIM file;</li><li>Change WIM image name, description, or bootable status;</li><li>Export image(s) from one WIM to an existing or new WIM;</li><li>Support for both compression formats used in WIMs (LZX and XPRESS);</li><li>Split a WIM file into parts, or join a split WIM into a standalone WIM;</li><li>Directly apply, export, or mount an image from a split WIM.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Wimlib isn't available in the official Ubuntu repositories and the Launchpad PPAs I've found either don't have Wimlib for all the supported Ubuntu versions or they have old Wimlib packages so to make it easier to install in Ubuntu (and derivatives), I've uploaded the latest Wimlib to the main WebUpd8 PPA.</div><br /><br /><h2>Install Wimlib in Ubuntu via PPA</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>To add the main WebUpd8 PPA</b> (note: our PPA has quite a few packages, so check out the <a href="https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/webupd8">package list</a> before adding the PPA) <b>and install Wimlib in Ubuntu, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install wimtools</code></pre>Once installed, run "<i>man wimlib-imagex</i>" (for the command, you can simply use "<i>imagex</i>" instead of "<i>wimblib-imagex</i>") in a terminal to see the available options. Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander Switching To Mir Display Server By Default

Kubuntu Not Switching To Mir Display Server

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Kubuntu won't be switching to <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/03/ubuntu-to-build-its-own-display-server.html">Mir</a> / XMir, has announced Jonathan Riddell, the main Kubuntu developer, in a recent blog <a href="http://blogs.kde.org/2013/06/26/kubuntu-wont-be-switching-mir-or-xmir">post</a>.</b></div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">In the same article, Jonathan mentions some recent screenshots posted by <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/110095242873945299189/posts">Thomas Voß</a>, Technical Architect at Canonical, which show that KDE, among other desktop environments, can run on XMir (a layer that allows running X11 applications on top of Mir). The next major GIMP release will be 2.10, which is expected to be fully ported to GEGL, OpenCL acceleration support in GEGL, get support for layer masks on layer groups, a new wrap tool, seamless cloning, an unified transform tool and more. Then, with GIMP 3.0, the application is expected to be ported to GTK3 (currently work in progress). The estimated release dates for GIMP 2.10 and 3.0 are not known yet.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Install GIMP 2.8.6 in Ubuntu</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Thanks to +<a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/117581776478455814502/posts">Thorsten Stettin</a>'s GIMP PPA which has been updated today, you can <b>install the latest GIMP 2.8.6 in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander (currently under development), 13.04, 12.10 or 12.04 by using the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install gimp</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Thorsten's PPA also contains some GIMP goodies which I'm sure you'll like so I'll tell you how to install them below.</b></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>GIMP Plugin Registry</b>, a collection of GIMP plugins which includes GIMP FX Foundry and many other useful plugins, can be installed from the same PPA:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install gimp-plugin-registry</code></pre><div style="text-align: justify;">Another package available in Thorsten's PPA is <b><a href="http://gmic.sourceforge.net/">G'MIC</a></b>, a tool that's available as a GIMP plugin which comes with a large number of pre-defined image filters and effects (more than 190). Install it using the following command:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install gimp-gmic</code></pre>And finally, two other packages are available in this PPA: <br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">gimp-help 2.8 (version 2.6 is available in the Ubuntu repositories) for about 19 languages, including English, Greek, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Chinese and more - to install it, search for it in Synaptic or USC;</li><li style="text-align: justify;">GIMP Lensfun, a plugin to correct lens distortion using the lensfun library - you can install using "sudo apt-get install gimp-lensfun".</li></ul>

That means that if you've added some PPA which has a newer GTK3 version (like the GNOME 3 PPA), you won't be able to use this PPA unless you purge the other PPA or downgrade the packages!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>To add the GTK+3 Broadway PPA and upgrade to GTK3 with Broadway in Ubuntu, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:malizor/gtk-broadway<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get upgrade</code></pre><br /><b>Then, log out, log back in and to run an application with the Broadway backend, use the following command:</b><br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>GDK_BACKEND=broadway UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 <i><APPLICATION></i></code></pre>where "APPLICATION" is the GTK3 application executable. For instance, to run Gedit with the Broadway backend, use:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>GDK_BACKEND=broadway UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 gedit</code></pre>"UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=" and "LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0" are required because with the global menu and overlay scrollbars enabled, the applications segfault.<br /><br />And finally, <b>open Firefox</b> (using Chrome didn't work properly in my test) <b>and enter the following address: http://localhost:8080</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">You can also use this from a remote machine, by entering your IP followed by the 8080 port. In my test, this also worked using Firefox on my Android phone.</div><br />To specify the port (if you use a different port for each app, they can run in the same time), use "BROADWAY_DISPLAY=" followed by the port number (e.g.: BROADWAY_DISPLAY=8081) in the command used to launch the application.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Remember: <b>you can only use this with GTK3 applications</b>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There is another PPA which provides the latest stable GTK 3.8 for Ubuntu 13.04, that comes with some extra features, like <a href="https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/broadwayd.html">password</a> protection, running multiple GTK+ applications in the same web browser and more, however, since Ubuntu 13.04 doesn't come with GTK 3.8 by default, I don't recommend using this unless you only want to test it in some virtual machine or you plan on using Broadway on a server. You can find the Ubuntu 13.04 GTK 3.8 with Broadway PPA <a href="https://launchpad.net/~malizor/+archive/gtk-next-broadway">HERE</a> - make sure you read the PPA description since Broadway works a bit differently in GTK 3.8.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Reverting the changes</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>If you want to purge the GTK+3 Broadway PPA and go back to the GTK+3 version you had installed previously, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install ppa-purge<br />sudo ppa-purge ppa:malizor/gtk-broadway</code></pre>
