Better Font Rendering In Linux With Infinality

<div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Many of you have probably already heard of Infinality, but I've decided to write a post about it anyway, for those who aren't familiar with it yet, because it greatly improves the font rendering on Linux.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="http://www.infinality.net/">Infinality</a> is a set of Freetype patches that try to provide an improved font rendering for Linux and also, to allow easy customization</b> so the users can adjust the settings to their taste. Using it, <b>you can easily set the font style to emulate OSX, OSX2, Windows 98, WIndows XP or Windows 7</b> or you can use the<b> "Linux" or "Infinality" (default) styles</b>.</div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">While Infinality is very useful for most Linux distributions, the Ubuntu font rendering is pretty good already, but even so, there are quite a few Ubuntu users who install Infinality, like Miroslav Hadzhiev (Мирослав Хаджиев), the Ubuntu Bulgarian Translators admin, who says that: "<i>[...] this [Infinality] project has brought me back to Linux. I work with documents all day long so the fonts are VERY important to me</i>". He adds that using Infinality, the fonts are<i> sharper and more vivid</i> on large screens - <a href="http://img.netupd8.com/infinality-ubuntu.png" target="_blank">here's a screenshot</a> from Miroslav's Ubuntu computer (on the left: Ubuntu default; on the right: Infinality with "Linux" style).</div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Using Infinality in Ubuntu, the fonts are easier on the eyes and while you may not notice a major or even any difference at all in the screenshot below, you should see the difference after you've used Infinality for a while on your computer:</div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/ubuntu-with-without-infinality.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="217" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OL2tJl7BZF4/UbB6CBTUZoI/AAAAAAAAPbI/epGZnqpEUPo/s320/ubuntu-with-without-infinality.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">On the left: Infinality (using the Linux style); on the right: the default Ubuntu font configuration</td></tr></tbody></table><b>Click <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rd8z37wTXho/UbB6YL-_BMI/AAAAAAAAPbQ/S1eHfepNnyY/s1600/infinality-both.gif">HERE</a> to zoom in so you can better see the details.</b><br /><br />The screenshot above uses the Linux Infinality style, but there are many other style you can choose from, as I was saying above.<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The differences in the above screenshot are not very clear because like I was saying, the fonts in Ubuntu look good already, but you should notice a big difference between the default Debian font rendering and Infinality, in the screenshot below:</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/debian-with-without-infinality.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lspWsJVPPms/UbBpfrnCLmI/AAAAAAAAPa4/0qjde0CDdWg/s320/debian-with-without-infinality.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If you want to use or just try out Infinality, here's how to install it in Ubuntu and Debian (with links to installation instructions for other Linux distributions) and set it up.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Install and configure Infinality for better font rendering in Linux</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ubuntu: </b>Freetype with the Infinality patches can be installed in Ubuntu by using a PPA.<b> To add the PPA and install the required packages in Ubuntu 12.04 or 13.04, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:no1wantdthisname/ppa<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get upgrade<br />sudo apt-get install fontconfig-infinality</code></pre><b>Once installed, log out and log back in.</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Debian: the PPA works on Debian 7 too</b> (that's actually how I've installed Infinality in the screenshot above - I've used "raring" for the version), <span style="color: red;"><b>but because I've only tested it for a few minutes, I can't say how stable it is</b></span>. If you want to use it in Debian, follow the instructions below on your own risk. <b>An alternative way of installing Infinality on Debian can be found <a href="http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=88545">HERE</a>.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>To add an unofficial Infinality PPA and install all the required packages in Debian (32bit and 64bit), use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/no1wantdthisname/ppa/ubuntu raring main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/infinality.list<br />echo "deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/no1wantdthisname/ppa/ubuntu raring main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/infinality.list<br />sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys E985B27B</code></pre><br />For another way of getting better fonts in Debian, see <a href="http://blog.desdelinux.net/mejora-las-tipografias-en-debian-sin-infinality/">THIS</a> article (it's in Spanish but you only need the commands).<br /><br /><br /><b>Installing Infinality in other Linux distributions:</b><br /><ul><li><a href="http://www.infinality.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=77">Fedora (official Infinality repository) and generic installation instructions</a></li><li><b>Arch Linux: </b><a href="https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration#Infinality:_the_easy_way">the easy way</a> | <a href="https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration#Infinality:_the_generic_way">the generic way</a> (AUR)</li><li><a href="https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=home%3Anamtrac%3Asubpixel">openSUSE repository</a></li><li><a href="http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=88545">Debian installation instructions</a> (build instructions and pre-built binaries)</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Once you install Infinality, it's time to configure it. To set the style you want to use, run the following command:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo bash /etc/fonts/infinality/infctl.sh setstyle</code></pre><div style="text-align: justify;">And select the style you want to use. Available options are: debug, infinality, linux, osx, osx2, win7, win98 and winxp (I recommend using the <b>"linux" style</b>, obviously, but you can try any style, then remember to log out and log back in - you can easily select a different style later on by using the same command). <b>To use the Windows or OSX style you'll also need to use the Windows or OSX fonts</b>.</div><br /><b>Optional:</b> next, open <i>/etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh</i> with a text editor as root - I'll use Gedit below:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo -H gedit /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh</code></pre>And in this file, search for <i><b>USE_STYLE</b></i> (it should be USE_STYLE="DEFAULT" by default) and change it to one of the following styles (I recommend using "UBUNTU" here but you should also try the default to see which one you like better):<br /><ul><li>DEFAULT - A compromise that should please most people;</li><li>OSX - Simulate OSX rendering;</li><li>IPAD - Simulate iPad rendering;</li><li>UBUNTU - Simulate Ubuntu rendering;</li><li>LINUX - Generic "Linux" style - no snapping or certain other tweaks;</li><li>WINDOWS - Simulate Windows rendering;</li><li>WINDOWS7 - Simulate Windows rendering with normal glyphs;</li><li>WINDOWS7LIGHT- Simulate Windows 7 rendering with lighter glyphs;</li><li>WINDOWS - Simulate Windows rendering;</li><li>VANILLA - Just subpixel hinting;</li><li>CUSTOM - Your own choice; </li><li>Infinality styles:</li><ul><li>CLASSIC - Infinality rendering circa 2010. No snapping;</li><li>NUDGE - CLASSIC with lightly stem snapping and tweaks;</li><li>PUSH - CLASSIC with medium stem snapping and tweaks;</li><li>SHOVE - Full stem snapping and tweaks without sharpening;</li><li>SHARPENED - Full stem snapping, tweaks, and Windows-style sharpening;</li><li>INFINALITY - Settings used by the Infinality developer;</li><li>DISABLED - Act as though running without the extra infinality enhancements (just subpixel hinting).</li></ul></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">In this file you can change many other settings but if you don't know what they do, only change the style. Then, save the file, log out and log back in to see the changes.</div><br /><b>For discussion, bug reports and so, visit the <a href="http://www.infinality.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=1">Infinality forums</a>.</b><br /><br /><b>Update: for improved font rendering in Java / Swing applications (OpenJDK 7), see this article: <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/install-openjdk-patched-with-font-fixes.html">Install OpenJDK Patched With Font Fixes [Ubuntu PPA]</a></b><br /><br /><br /><br /><h2>Reverting the changes</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">For <b>Ubuntu</b>, to remove Infinality and revert all the changes made by using the instructions above, use the following commands:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get purge fontconfig-infinality<br />sudo apt-get install ppa-purge<br />sudo ppa-purge ppa:no1wantdthisname/ppa</code></pre>Once the PPA is purge, log out and log back in.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">For <b>Debian</b>, if you've added the PPA and want to revert the changes, use the following commands:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get purge fontconfig-infinality<br />sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/infinality.list<br />sudo apt-get update</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Then (still for Debian), downgrade the Freetype package using the following command, presuming you're using Debian stable:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>- 32bit: <br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install libfreetype6/stable</code></pre>- 64bit:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install libfreetype6/stable libfreetype6:i386/stable</code></pre>Note: you also need to downgrade libfreetype6-dev if it's installed and also, libfreetype6:i386 may not be installed. How To Automatically Mute Music When Receiving VoIP Calls [PulseAudio]

<div style="text-align: justify;">By default, in Ubuntu and probably other Linux distributions<b>, if you're playing music </b>in Rhythmbox, Audacious and so on<b> while receiving a call in applications such as Skype, Ekiga Softphone, SFLphone VoIP Client and other VoIP applications, the music continues to play even after answering the call. PulseAudio has a feature that allows pausing or muting the music when receiving a call, but it's not enabled by default, at least in Ubuntu, so here's how to enable it. </b></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UMehKWHe-qE/Ua8i9PBsL9I/AAAAAAAAPaA/DUTL94Hei_k/s1600/audacious-muted-skype-pulseaudio.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="skype call audacious muted" border="0" height="205" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UMehKWHe-qE/Ua8i9PBsL9I/AAAAAAAAPaA/DUTL94Hei_k/s320/audacious-muted-skype-pulseaudio.png" title="skype call audacious muted" width="320" /></a></div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">To be able to use this PulseAudio feature, you need to enable two PulseAudio modules (one is already enabled in Ubuntu): "<i>module-role-cork</i>" and "<i>module-augment-properties</i>" and for applications that don't support this by default, to add a <i>media.role</i> to the application desktop file. Rhythmbox, Banshee and Skype (probably other applications too) already have this build-in so for them, you only need to load the PulseAudio modules I was talking about earlier (see below). </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Here's the behavior you should expect after using the instructions below:</b></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>for some applications that have this feature built-in, the music player (Rhythmbox, Banshee) will pause the music when answering a call on Skype, SFLphone, etc.;</li><li>some applications that have this feature build-in will mute the sound when answering a call on a VoIP applications. Example of such an app: Totem (Videos); </li><li>for applications that don't support this by default, like Audacious and Linphone for instance, the music will be muted when answering a phone call.</li></ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Please note that this doesn't currently work with web browsers</b> so if you're watching a video on YouTube in Firefox, Chrome, etc., the video won't be paused or muted when receiving a call.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>PulseAudio: automatically mute music when answering calls in Skype, other VoIP apps</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The instructions below have been tested in Ubuntu, but they should work in other Linux distributions as well, that's why I've added generic instructions too.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>1.a. Ubuntu: </b>firstly, let's load the "module-role-cork" PulseAudio module ("module-augment-properties" is already enabled by default in Ubuntu):</div><br />- <b>for Ubuntu 12.10, 13.04 and newer:</b><br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>pactl load-module module-role-cork</code></pre><b>- for Ubuntu 12.04 or older:</b><br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>pactl load-module module-cork-music-on-phone</code></pre><br />This will only load the module for this session and the changes will be lost after a system restart so let's make this permanent. To do this, open <i>/etc/pulse/default.pa</i> as root with a text editor - I'll use Gedit below:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo -H gedit /etc/pulse/default.pa</code></pre><div style="text-align: justify;">(<i>I've used "sudo" instead of "gksu" because "gksu" is no longer available by default in Ubuntu 13.04 and it seems the developers want to stop supporting it anyway</i>)</div><br />and:<br />- <b>for Ubuntu 12.10, 13.04 or newer</b>, search for "<i>load-module module-role-cork</i>" and uncomment that line (to "uncomment" means to remove the "#" from the beginning of the line);<br />- <b>for Ubuntu 12.04</b> or older, the module name is different so search for "<i>load-module module-cork-music-on-phone</i>" and uncomment this line (to "uncomment" means to remove the "#" from the beginning of the line).<br /><br />Then save the file. <br /><br /><b>1.b. For other Linux distributions:</b> make sure both "module-role-cork" and "module-augment-properties" PulseAudio modules are loaded:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>pactl load-module module-role-cork<br />pactl load-module module-augment-properties</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The first one might be called "module-cork-music-on-phone" on older PulseAudio versions so you may want to try that too if PulseAudio is older than 2.1. If you get an error when running the commands above, it may mean that the module was already loaded.</div><br />Then, open <i>/etc/pulse/default.pa</i> as root with a text editor - I'll use Gedit for the command below:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo -H gedit /etc/pulse/default.pa</code></pre><br />Then search for "<i>load-module module-role-cork</i>" (if you can't find it, search for "<i>load-module module-cork-music-on-phone</i>" instead) and "<i>load-module </i><i>module-augment-properties</i>" and uncomment both lines (to "uncomment" means to remove the "#" from the beginning of the line). And finally, save the file.<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ubuntu and other Linux distributions: for Skype, </b><b> SFLphone, Rhythmbox and Banshee (and probably other applications), that's all you have to do</b>. Now when you answer a call, Banshee or Rhythmbox should be automatically paused.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>2. Only for applications that don't support this by default</b>, such as Audacious and Linphone: you need to edit the application desktop file (which you'll find in <i>/usr/share/applications/</i>) and add the following at the bottom of the file:</div><br />- for music apps (example: Audacious):<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>X-PulseAudio-Properties=media.role=music</code></pre>- for VoIP / SIP apps (example: Linphone):<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>X-PulseAudio-Properties=media.role=phone</code></pre>After making the changes, close the application and start it again from the menu / Dash.<br /><br /><b>Example:</b> for Audacious, you need to edit the <i>/usr/share/applications/audacious.desktop</i> file so open that file as root with a text editor - I'll use Gedit below:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo -H gedit /usr/share/applications/audacious.desktop</code></pre>and at the bottom of this file, add "X-PulseAudio-Properties=media.role=music" (without the quotes), save the file, close Audacious and start it from the menu / Dash. Now, if Audacious is playing when receiving a call on Skype for instance, the music will be muted when answering the call.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Basically, PulseAudio will mute any application with "media.role=music" when some other application with "media.role=phone" starts makes use of the sound </b>(although when ringing, the music isn't muted until you answer the call, at least that's how it has worked in my test with Skype).<br /><br />For video players (e.g.: VLC, which doesn't support this PulseAudio feature by default), you could add "media.role=video", but you can also simply stick with "media.role=music" since that will get the job done for any type of application or even games. Y PPA Manager 0.9.9 Released With Support For Linux Mint 15 And Ubuntu 13.10 [Quick Update]

<div style="text-align: justify;">Quick update: today I've released <b>Y PPA Manager 0.9.9 with support for Linux Mint 15 Olivia as well as the latest Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander</b> (currently under development).</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UtRNngrNYE4/Ua4zUmcllRI/AAAAAAAAPZw/gnedlpFHBHA/s1600/y-ppa-manager.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="208" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UtRNngrNYE4/Ua4zUmcllRI/AAAAAAAAPZw/gnedlpFHBHA/s320/y-ppa-manager.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">For those not familiar with Y PPA Manager, this is a tool that lets you <b>easily add, remove or purge PPAs</b> as well as <b>search for packages in Launchpad PPAs</b>, a feature that should be very useful when you can't find a PPA for your favourite app on WebUpd8 or other similar websites. <b>Other features include:</b></div><a name='more'></a><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>list the packages available in a PPA added on your system;</li><li>download packages from PPAs without adding them;</li><li>PPAs backup / restore, along with all the PPA keys;</li><li>update single repositories using a command line tool (by the way, when you add a PPA using Y PPA Manager, it's updated without updating all the software sources) called "update-ppa" - usage example: "sudo update-ppa ppa:webupd8team/java";</li><li>some options that should help you re-enable the working PPAs when upgrading to a newer Ubuntu / Linux Mint version;</li><li>remove duplicate PPAs;</li><li>Unity quicklists / optional AppIndicator; </li><li>more.</li></ul><br />A complete list of features can be found on <a href="https://launchpad.net/y-ppa-manager">Launchpad</a>.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The Linux Mint 15 and Ubuntu 13.10 (useful even if you don't use Saucy: you can search Launchpad for a certain package to see if it's available in a PPA for Saucy) support are the only changes in this release. Because <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/05/linux-mint-15-olivia-available-for.html">Linux Mint 15</a> ships with a custom "add-apt-repository" command, it took a bit more to get Y PPA Manager to work with it, but all should be working now. Maka pergilah ia kesebuah desa untuk belajar bagaimana memiliki keinginan dan semangat. sesampai di desa, ia bertemulah dengan seorang bijak. Setelah mendengar cerita si pemuda kota, maka si bijakpun mengambil bak berisi air dan tapa basa-basi menenggelamkan kepala pemuda itu kedalam bak yg berisi air tersebut selama beberapa menit. Pemuda itu perlahan mencoba mengeluarkan kepalanya dari air, namun tak berhasil. Kemudia selang beberapa saat, pemuda itu mendorong si bijak dan akhirnya mampu mengeluarakan kepalanya dari air dan berkata "Hei, apa yang kau lakukan", dan org desa tersebutpun menjawab "Apa yg bisa kau pelajari dari pengalaman ini ?" Pemuda itu berkata "Tidak ada". Kemudian org desapun menjawab "Tentu ada, kau telah belajar sesuatu darinya. Ketika pertama kau mencoba mengeluarkan kepalamu dari air , kau tidak berhasil karena keinginanmu tidaklah kuat. Dan setelahnya kau mapu mengangkat dari dalam air , seperti itulah seharusnya semangat yang diperlukan untuk mencapai tujuan".<br />Ya seperti itulah, banyak orang untuk beberapa saat mereka mengatakan ingin sesuatu dan setelah bebera saatnya mereka terlihat seperti kehilangan minat. Kenapa ? Hal ini mungkin dikarenakan mereka tidak tahu alasan sebenarnya mengapa menginginkan itu. Sekedar action itu mungkin tidak banyak membantu. Tanpa hasrat dan kehendak yang kuat kita akan mudah menyerah. Memahami mengapa kita menginginkan sesuatu akan membantu memberi semangat dan kekuatan dalam diri kita setia saat dan itu mampu mengarahkan untuk mengambil tindakan <b>saatnya total action</b> !<br />Ok kawan, tetapkan tujuan dan inilah saatnya total action !
